The United States has only two percent of the world’s oil reserves and relies on imports to supply roughly half of the country’s oil needs, making the international components of energy critical to the country’s national security. Join the Council's Meridian: Global Young Professionals this month for a conversation with Tejal Shah, Foreign Service officer at the U.S. State Department. Mingle with other Meridian members in their 20s and 30s at the Council’s new headquarters in downtown Dallas and discuss her current work on U.S. energy policy with China and India.

As an energy officer in the Office of International Energy and Commodity Policy, Tejal Shah handles energy security issues, including strategic petroleum reserve policies, energy policies and investments in Asia. In this role, she also serves as the State Department liaison to the International Energy Agency. Prior to her current assignment, Shah served as an economic officer at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi from 2006 to 2009, covering sectoral issues including civil aviation, manufacturing, combating terrorist financing, defense trade and sales, competition and anti-trust issues, microfinance and regional economic issues. From 2003 to 2005, Shah was the assistant cultural affairs officer and vice consul at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, where she was the primary programming officer for the Embassy on cultural shows, U.S. professional speakers and the American Corners.
