Since the election of French President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007, the U.S.-France relationship has grown stronger. Supportive of President Obama even before his 2008 election, President Sarkozy has emphasized the need for broader collaborations between our two countries. The two leaders’ willingness to approach negotiations in a private and innovative way while meeting with President Hu Jintao of the People’s Republic of China at the G-20 summit earlier this spring marked a transition into this new era of partnership. His Excellency Pierre Vimont, Ambassador of France to the United States, will discuss how the French-American bond has changed over the last few years and what lies ahead as our countries work together.
Pierre Vimont became Ambassador of France to the United States in August of 2007. He previously served as chief of staff to the French minister of foreign affairs and as Ambassador and permanent representative of France to the European Union. Ambassador Vimont joined the Foreign Service in 1977 and was first posted to London as first secretary. He then spent the next several years with the Press and Information Office at the Quai d’Orsay. Ambassador Vimont went on to work as director for development and scientific, technical and educational cooperation, and then for cultural, scientific and technical relations. He holds a law degree and is a graduate of the Institute of Political Studies and the National School of Administration.
