Try your hand at encoding a message using an authentic, World War II-era German Enigma machine; learn about the challenges law enforcement faces in combating terrorism; and discover the reality of espionage within our borders. These topics will be examined by experts whose careers were devoted to spying and protecting America from spies as part of a lecture series organized by the Museum of Nature & Science and the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth in conjunction with the museum’s exhibit, The Science of Spying. Americans are well aware of the more famous foreign espionage cases that have occurred in the United States, including the Rosenbergs, Aldrich Ames, and, most recently, Walter Myers, the State Department analyst caught passing on secrets to the Cuban government. Backed by 25 years of experience with the Central Intelligence Agency, Jim Olson will discuss covert political action, cyber threats to national security, and current intelligence operations of foreign spies inside our borders. Olson received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1969. He is a senior lecturer, CIA Officer in Residence and director of the Certificate in Advanced International Affairs Program at the Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University, where he teaches courses on intelligence, national security and international crisis management. He served in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations, mostly overseas in clandestine operations. In addition to several foreign assignments, he was chief of counterintelligence at CIA headquarters in Langley, Va. Olson has been awarded the Intelligence Medal of Merit, the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal, the Donovan Award and several Distinguished Service Citations. He is the recipient of awards from the Bush School and the Association of Former Students for excellence in teaching. He is also the author of Fair Play: The Moral Dilemmas of Spying, published by Potomac Books in 2006.
