Truth really is stranger than fiction. In The Big Short, an account of the recession in the U.S., Michael Lewis explains how the “impossible” event – the free fall of the American economy – finally occurred; how the things that we wanted, like easy money and greatly expanded home ownership, were vehicles for that crash; and how shareholder demand for profit forced investment executives to eat the forbidden fruit of toxic derivatives.
In an on-stage conversation with World Affairs Council Board Member Talmage Boston, Lewis will detail the cast of characters – villains, a few heroes and a lot of people who look very foolish, including high government officials and heads of major investment banks. He will tell the stories that brought our country to its current state and what the future holds for America’s return.
A native of New Orleans, Michael Lewis graduated from Princeton University with a degree in art history and earned a master’s at The London School of Economics. He is the author of Liar’s Poker, The New New Thing, Moneyball, The Blind Side, Panic, Home Game and The Big Short. Prior to Lewis’ career as an author, he worked with The Salomon Brothers on Wall Street and in London.
