Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with 80 percent of its population living in poverty. When a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the country on January 12, 2010, it left more than 200,000 people dead and 1 million people displaced. The aftermath of the disaster has resulted further human suffering and  a stalled rebuilding process. Although many nations, including the United States, have pledged humanitarian aid to help rebuild the country, what political and economic challenges still lay ahead for Haitians as they try to recover from this tragedy?

Join us for Saturday at the Warwick Melrose with Dr. Karl Rathjen, pediatric orthopedist at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital and Children’s Medical Center, who will speak about his experiences working in Haiti during the second week following the earthquake and share his perspective on the impact of relief efforts. Saturday at the Warwick Melrose is an ongoing speaker series that gives Council members the opportunity to enjoy breakfast and conversations with guest speakers in an informal setting.

Dr. Karl Rathjen received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, where he also completed his general surgery internship and orthopedic surgery residency. He is an associate professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and serves as the Director of Orthopedics at Children’s Medical Center. Dr. Rathjen is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America, the Scoliosis Research Society, the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, the American Medical Association, and the Texas Orthopedic Association.
