It will be invaluable for both political and business leaders alike. Nye developed the concept of hard and soft power, and now he shows how the best leaders use both in a smart way."
--Walter Isaacson, author of Einstein: His Life and Universe, and President, the Aspen Institute

On April 4, one of America’s most prominent intellectuals will discuss modern leadership. Known best for developing the concept of “soft power” – how leaders can influence the behavior and interests of others through cultural and ideological means – Joseph Nye has recently written The Powers to Lead. He argues that the information revolution has dramatically changed the playing field, when old organizational hierarchies have given way to fluid networks of contacts, and that when mistrust of leaders is on the rise, our ideas about leadership are clearly due for redefinition. Modern leadership requires smart power, “a judicious situational balance of hard and soft power.” Nye has written recently on the Iraq War, French-US relations and Turkey’s campaign to join the European Union, in addition to blogging on The Huffington Post. He will analyze for our audience the nature of leadership in today's world by drawing examples from the careers of leaders as disparate as Hitler, Gandhi and George W. Bush.
– Adapted from the Oxford University Press .

Joseph Nye, who was recently ranked sixth by his academic peers for having the most impact on the field of international relations, is distinguished service professor at Harvard University and Sultan of Oman professor of International Relations. From December 1995 through June 2004, he served as dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Nye has been on the faculty at Harvard since 1964, during which time he also served as assistant secretary of defense for International Security Affairs, chair of the National Intelligence Council and deputy assistant secretary of state for Security Assistance, Science and Technology. His most recent publications are: The Powers to Lead and Soft Power:The Means to Success in World Politics. Nye received his bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Princeton University, did postgraduate work at Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship and earned a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard.

- Registration for this event is now closed. -
A waiting list will be started at the event.
