Chávez knows that and is trying to exploit it." As controversy within Venezuela continues, the stability of the relationship between the U.S. and Latin America remains to be determined. Will Chavez influence his counterparts and succeed in his effort to establish an anti-U.S. bloc?

Michael Shifter is vice president for policy and director of the Andean program at the Inter-American Dialogue. He teaches Latin American politics as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and has frequently testified before Congress about U.S. policy towards Latin America. Prior to joining the Inter-American Dialogue, Shifter directed the Latin American and Caribbean program at the National Endowment for Democracy and the Ford Foundation's governance and human rights program in the Andean region and Southern Cone in Peru and Chile.

- Registration for this event is now closed. -
A waiting list will be started at the event.
