This visit is especially timely as the country’s recently elected President Dimitris Christofias has set as his top priority the resumption of long-stalled talks to reunite Cyprus. This island, which has been divided since a 1974 Turkish military intervention, is at the crossroads of three regions – Europe, the Middle East and North Africa – and is a key player in the politics of the area. A former British colony, Cyprus declared its independence in 1960. In recent years, the “Cyprus question” has played a significant role in Turkey’s uncertain application to the European Union (EU), with one third of Cyprus under Turkish rule and the remaining independent portion, consisting primarily of Greek Cypriots, acting as a member of the EU.

Andreas Kakouris became ambassador of Cyprus to the United States on December 6, 2006. Previously, he served as ambassador to Ireland and director of the Political Affairs Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has also held various postings in the Cypriot Permanent Delegation to the European Commission in Brussels and the Cypriot Consulate-General and Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Cyprus Fast Facts: • Size: Nearly 2/3 the size of Connecticut • Population: 789,000 people o Less than .26% of the U.S. population of 301 million • Dominant Religions: 78% Greek Orthodox, 18% Muslim, 4% Other (including Maronite and Armenian Apostolic) • The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the area under Cyprus government control is 21.41 billion dollars, while the portion governed by the Turkish Cypriots is 4.54 billion dollars • Services account for 78% of Cyprus’ GDP, with tourism and financial services as its most important sectors.
- 2008 CIA World Factbook

- Registration for this event is now closed. -
A waiting list will be started at the event.
