In the early 90s, it was unclear what would result from the ethnic power struggles within the black majority as they fought for basic rights under the apartheid regime. Now, South Africa is a powerhouse for the continent and the U.S. has found an ally in its endeavors to create peace and provide aid throughout Africa. Join the Council to hear a first-hand account from the Ambassador of South Africa to the United States, His Excellency Welile Nhlapo, as he shares his perspective on current issues facing both nations.

His Excellency Welile Nhlapo became a leader for the African National Congress (ANC) while he was exiled in Botswana due to his involvement in black organizations. He played a role in the readmittance of South Africa to the world body at the UN General Assembly in 1994 and later served as director of the Africa Division in the Department of Political Affairs at the UN, representative to the Organization of African Unity and representative to the UN Economic Commission for Africa. In 2007, Ambassador Nhlapo was named Ambassador of South Africa to the United States.

- Registration for this event is now closed. -
A waiting list will be started at the event.
