Roxane Farmanfarmaian - A Brand New Middle East? How the Iran-Syria Axis is Redrawing the Map
Affiliated Lecturer, Department of Political and International Studies, University of Cambridge

Tue, 9 Oct, 2012 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Roxane Farmanfarmaian

PLEASE NOTE TIME CHANGE FOR THIS EVENT

The Arab Awakening is taking its newest unexpected turn. As Syria implodes into civil war, the fight is not over who controls Damascus, but who will claim the heart of the Middle East. A new geopolitical map is emerging as the region faces fundamental and unpredictable adjustments. When the dust clears, new alliances, new borders, new trade partners and even new countries may transform the Middle East as we know it.

Dr. Roxane Farmanfarmaian is a specialist on Iran and Western policy in the Persian Gulf region, including issues of oil, media, terrorism and political Islam. Her research focuses on identity, radicalization and securitization, and the use of soft power in relations between the West and the Middle East. She is a briefer for the British Ministry of Defense and has consulted for a variety of governmental and commercial organizations. She is also a senior research fellow at London’s Global Policy Institute, an affiliated lecturer of International Relations of the Modern Middle East at the University of Cambridge, and Wayne Owens Scholar of Middle East Studies at the University of Utah.
