John Mackey - Conscious Capitalism
CEO and Co-founder, Whole Foods Market

Tue, 19 Feb, 2013 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

John P. Mackey

Businesses around the globe need to steer capitalism away from today’s growing trend of cronyism, by embracing conscious capitalism. My co-author Raj Sisodia and I describe this as a way of thinking about business to ensure that it is grounded in a higher purpose to enhance its positive impact on the world. When reinvented in this way, capitalism is an extraordinarily powerful system of value creation mutually benefiting all stakeholders. – John Mackey

Do we need a new way to think about business, corporations and capitalism for the 21st century? Corporations are probably the most influential institutions in the world today and yet many people do not believe that they can be trusted. While making money is essential for the vitality and sustainability of a business, it is not the only, or even the most important, reason for a business to exist in the eyes of a conscious company. Conscious businesses’ core belief is that they can give back to the community while still making a profit.

Co-founder and CEO of Whole Foods Market John Mackey is also the co-founder of the Conscious Capitalism Movement. The four key pillars of this movement are higher purpose, stakeholder integration, conscious leadership and conscious culture and management. Mackey practices what he preaches in his own business. Not only is Whole Foods Market very profitable, a $4.7 billion Fortune 500 company, but it also gives employees a sense of purpose and has been ranked a "Fortune 100 Best Companies To Work For" every year since 1998. He founded Whole Planet Foundation to help end poverty in developing nations; he launched the Local Producer Loan Program to help local farmers and food producers expand their businesses; he created the Global Animal Partnership to set standards for humane farm animal treatment; and he laid the foundation for the company’s Health Starts Here initiative, which encourages health and wellness among customers and Team Members.

He has been recognized for his work over the years by being named Ernst & Young’s “United States Entrepreneur of the Year,” Institutional Investor’s “Best CEO in America,” Barron’s “World’s Best CEO,” MarketWatch’s “CEO of the Year,” FORTUNE magazine’s “Businessperson of the Year,” and Esquire’s “Most Inspiring CEO,” among many others.
