Featuring Keynote

Dr. Robert M. Gates

Secretary of Defense (2006-2011)

Keynote speaker Dr. Robert M. Gates has built careers that have taken him from covert operations to a major campus to the Cabinet. And he is a genuine Boy Scout.

Dr. Gates, working with presidents from both major parties, was director of the Central Intelligence Agency (1991-93) and a member of the National Security Council. He was president of Texas A&M when he was appointed Secretary of Defense, serving under both President George W. Bush and Barack Obama (2006-2011).

Dr. Gates is author of the recently published Duty: Memoir of a Secretary at War. He wrote of his time in the CIA in his 2011 book, From the Shadows: The Ultimate Insider's Story of Five Presidents and How They Won the Cold War.

The Kansas native and U.S. Air Force veteran is the only career officer in the CIA's history to rise from entry-level employee to Director. He holds a doctorate in Russian and Soviet history from Georgetown University.

In addition to receiving many national awards for intelligence work, he served on boards of American corporations and education organizations and was a member of the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America and president of the National Eagle Scout Association.
