Home of Karolyne and Bryan Garner

When legal expert and veteran writer Bryan Garner had lunch with Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in 2006, he didn’t know it would be the beginning of what he calls “one of the great friendships of my life.”

Bonded by their mutual love for the law and words, the two not only became friends, but also collaborators and co-authors of Making Your Case and Reading Law. Now Garner, the author of more than 20 books, pays homage to Justice Scalia in his first memoir—Nino and Me: My Unusual Friendship with Justice Antonin Scalia.

Through amazing personal anecdotes, Garner—who says he wrote the book as “a way of coping with the grief of losing his irreplaceable friend”—reveals a very different side of the influential and controversial Justice best known for his scathing criticisms of liberal court decisions and influential writings about the Constitution.

Garner, the editor-in-chief of Black’s Law Dictionary and Distinguished Research Professor of Law at SMU, illuminates the little-known sides of the man affectionately known as “Nino” to his friends. Behind the gruff veneer, Garner describes a man who was open to persuasion and compromise, wielded a wonderful sense of humor, remained fiercely loyal to his friends, was quick to help others, and never forgot his roots.

Join us for a rare look at the man behind the larger-than-life personae during this exclusive event for Global Forum members.
