The Council Honors Local High School Students 

Last Friday, the Council’s 20 Under 20 program highlighted twenty North Texas high schoolers who have consistently given back to their communities and exemplified what it means to be a globally aware citizen. Out of those students selected, eleven students were awarded a $1000 scholarship.

After suffering a brief shutdown, Congress now has about a month before the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Obama era policy that protects children of illegal immigrants from deportation) officially ends. Now, that the government is back on, an immigration deal supporting DACA is on the table in exchange for the funding of a border wall.

But the immigration debate, while back in full force, is old news. Immigration has been a “hot topic” of U.S. political debate for decades and has dodged Congress for years. The debate has ebbed and flowed in response to waves of immigration to the U.S. dating back as far as the 1800s.

Join us for a timely program to learn more about the history of U.S. immigration waves, policies and any prospects for reform when we host Laura Collins, Deputy Director for the Economic Growth program at the Bush Institute. An expert in immigration studies and politics, she served as the Director of Immigration Policy at the American Action Forum after working as a Senior Research Analyst at the Republican National Committee for the 2012 election cycle.
