In April, the Academic WorldQuest team from Plano West Senior High School returned to Washington, D.C., to defend their national title. The Council Honors Local High School Students 

Last Friday, the Council’s 20 Under 20 program highlighted twenty North Texas high schoolers who have consistently given back to their communities and exemplified what it means to be a globally aware citizen. Out of those students selected, eleven students were awarded a $1000 scholarship.

While Hollywood’s portrayal of sentient machines is both alarming and provocative, Amir Husain—inventor, computer scientist, and artificial intelligence (AI) savant—believes the impending “AI 3.0 Revolution” represents the dawn of a new form of intellectual diversity. Diversity that we should embrace to advance medicine, security, resource management, finance, energy, and other critical fields.

In his new book—The Sentient Machine: The Coming Age of Artificial Intelligence—Husain explores the existential questions at the core of AI and its growing importance in our daily lives: Why are humans valuable? What makes us intelligent? And how can we use our intelligence to create other forms of intelligence? Husain deftly explains complex computer science and AI concepts in clear layman’s language to share his vision for a new chapter in humanity.

The founder and CEO of Austin-based SparkCognition—an award-winning machine learning, AI- driven cognitive analytics company—Husain has been awarded 22 U.S. patents and has 40 more pending. He is a member of the Board of Advisors for IBM Watson, a member of the Forbes Technology Council and a member of the Board of Advisors for The University of Texas at Austin’s department of computer science.
