Remembering Our 41st President

We pause this week to remember President George H.W. Bush, who was a great friend and supporter of our Council. President Bush graciously accepted the H. Neil Mallon Award named for his friend who, in 1948, encouraged Yale graduate George Bush to start his career and make his home in Texas. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Bush family.

This week at the Council we're welcoming members on Thursday night to our annual Open House. As we watch the Brexit battles within Prime Minister Theresa May's government continue in the U.K., we recommend listening to Jim Falk's recent Global IQ Minute podcast with Ireland's Ambassador to the U.S. Daniel Mulhall to learn more about it, deal or no deal. For years, the Kurdish people of Iraq have endured unspeakable persecution. As a girl who spent her early childhood in Iran, Bayan Sami Adbul Rahman remembers fleeing from village to village with her family as Saddam Hussein hunted down the Kurds during a systematic genocide campaign know as Al Anfal—“the spoils of war.”

In 2004, her father, Sami Abdul Rahman, a key player in the Kurdish struggle against Saddam Hussein, was killed—along with her brother—in a terrorist attack on the Kurdish capital of Erbil. In the aftermath of Hussein execution, the tragedy has continued. Tens of thousands of Kurds were forced to flee their homeland in mass exodus to escape widespread murder and rape at the hands of ISIS terrorist.

Now Rahman, in her diplomatic post as Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representative to the United States, is championing independence for the Kurdish Region (Iraq Kurdistan). Despite the overwhelming passage of a referendum declaring its sovereignty last September, the central Iraqi government refuses to accept the voter outcome. Rahman reveals what the United States can do to help the Kurds secure what she says is “rightfully ours” and why.
