Jon Meacham has always been good about giving us perspective. The kind of perspective that provides welcome clarity about the complex personalities and events that shape our time. As a renowned and Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian, he has pulled the curtain back on the founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Franklin Roosevelt and George Herbert Walker Bush.

He’s also offered a singular view of the Civil Rights Movement. Now, in his new book The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels, Meacham tackles the extremism and partisan fury that have infected our politics and national psyche by showing us that time and again, hope has overcome fear and division. “The good news is that we have come through such darkness before,” he says. And he chronicles the times when our “better angels” have found a way to prevail during the backlash against immigrants during World War I, the Suffragette movement, cries of “America First” before World War II, and more. In the gloomiest times, America has been sustained by a belief in progress toward a better future.

A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, contributing writer to The New York Times Book Review, contributing editor at Time, and frequent guest on Morning Joe and National Public Radio— Meacham reveals how we can get there again.

Jon Meacham will also appear in Fort Worth
