The dramatic conclusion of the Civil War, beginning when Ulysses S. Grant took command of the Union armies in March 1864, is recounted in S. C. Gwynne’s second book, “Hymns of the Republic: The Story of the Final Year of the American Civil War.” This fresh narrative promises new insights and surprises, as Kirkus Reviews notes that Gwynne is “a consummate researcher… and is not shy with opinions.”

Texas Monthly correspondent S. C. Gwynne was executive editor of that publication for eight years. He was an award-winning correspondent for Time Magazine and has also written for the New York Times, Harper’s and other publications. He is a Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times best-selling author of six books. Sam has a bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton University and a master’s in writing from Johns Hopkins University.
