The history of the United States testifies to the need democracies have for hard-fought conflicts to discover the truth, not polite disagreements over tea. We have learned that our great leaders are often gifted fighters.

Anthony Kronman argues in his recent book, "The Assault on American Excellence," that our universities have been unwilling to prepare students for these battles for truth in an ill-conceived search for educational fairness and balance --- along with a desire to offend no one --- that has gripped US campuses since the frenzied cultural wars of the 1960s. This constitutes no less than a threat to democracy, he believes. "It emboldens offense-takers, promotes doublethink, and coddles ignorance," writes The New York Times.

Kronman has taught at Yale for more than forty years, where he is the Sterling Professor of Law and was Dean of the Law School from 1994 to 2004. He is the author of six books. Kronman is a graduate of Williams College and later received his J.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale.
