On Immigration with Jia Lynn Yang
Jia Lynn Yang, The New York Times

Friday, June 5, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Friday, June 5, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Emma Lazarus’ 1883 poem gave voice to our Statue of Liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…" Lady Liberty’s voice was muted by ethnic quotas in 1924, but restored by the landmark 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act. New York Times Deputy National Editor Jia Lynn Yang will talk with Bush Institute-SMU Economic Growth Initiative Director Laura Collins about “One Mighty and Irresistible Tide,” Yang’s history of the epic struggle that established equality in the American immigration system. Kirkus Reviews calls the book “Critical in understanding today’s immigration issues.”

Jia Lynn Yang came to the New York Times from the Washington Post, where she was deputy national security editor. She has reported on business and economics for the Post and for Fortune magazine. At the Post, Yang was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of Trump and Russia. Yang’s family immigrated to the U.S. from Taiwan in the seventies and she graduated from Yale University.

Laura Collins serves as the director of the Bush Institute-SMU Economic Growth Initiative at the George W. Bush Institute. Collins previously served as the Director of Immigration Policy at the American Action Forum. She has experience in politics, working as a Senior Research Analyst at the Republican National Committee for the 2012 election cycle and in the Texas House of Representatives for the 82nd Legislature. A former practicing attorney, Collins earned a J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law and a B.B.A. from the University of Oklahoma.
