No Time For Spectators: The Lessons That Mattered Most From West Point to the West Wing
Martin E. Dempsey, 18th Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff

Wednesday, October 14, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Wednesday, October 14, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

General Martin Dempsey calls on Americans to think more critically about leadership – and how it applies to their own lives, not just to those in the corner office. The former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff proposes that relationships between leaders and followers are most productive when they are founded on mutual expectations – and especially so when those expectations are realized. In his latest book, "No Time for Spectators," General Dempsey says this is a time for individuals who want to solve problems. One of our most popular guest moderators, John Ward, leads this discussion.

General Martin E. Dempsey served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Obama. He retired from the U.S. military in October 2015 after 41 years of service, including deployments to Iraq during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a recipient of the George C. Marshall Award for public service. General Dempsey currently teaches at Duke University. He is a West Point graduate, who also holds master’s degrees from Duke University, the National War College, and the Army Command and General Staff College.

John Ward (COL RET.) joined Lockheed Martin in 1987 after a 28-year military career in the U.S. Army where he served in numerous command and staff positions in the U.S. and abroad. At Lockheed Martin, he worked with targeting and navigation systems for military aircraft and tactical missile systems and served as Vice President – Domestic Business Development before he retired in 2014. Ward is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and an MSBA from Boston University.
