Global Forum: Value(s): Building a Better World for All
Mark Carney, Vice chairman and head of impact investing, Brookfield Asset Management; governor, Bank of Canada (2008 -2013); governor, Bank of England (2013 – 2020)

Thursday, May 27, 2021 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Thursday, May 27, 2021 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Mark Carney

Former Governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney argues that many of the most pressing issues facing society today, from systemic racism to climate change, can be attributed to misplaced values in a modern civilization where money, not people, is at the center of everything. In his view, there’s a need to rebuild the global economy to reflect human values rather than market values.

In Value(s), Carney offers solutions, proposing a restructuring of society that reconciles what most people hold dearest in their own lives - such as good health and the protection of human rights - with the current economic bias towards markets. He believes future generations may yet see a more humane society.

Mark Carney is the vice chairman and head of impact investing at Brookfield Asset Management. Previously, he was governor of both the Bank of England (2013-2020) and the Bank of Canada (2008-2013). Carney currently serves as the United Nations special envoy for climate action and finance. He has acted as an advisor to many international bodies and is a member of the Group of Thirty, among other organizations. Carney earned a B.A. from Harvard University and a M.Phil. and D.Phil. from Oxford University, all in economics.

Moderator: Cullum Clark, Director, Bush Institute – SMU Economic Growth Initiative George W. Bush Institute
