Mexican American artist and teacher Octavio Medellín (1907-1999) was influential in the Texas art scene for six decades, guiding young artists at the school of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts and founding the Creative Arts Center. In the first retrospective of his work, the DMA is offering Octavio Medellín: Spirit and Form, which includes some 80 sculpture pieces, public art, and noteworthy contributions from his 40 years of teaching in the Dallas area.

This event is being hosted exclusively for Contributors' Circle and Global Forum Members. The DMA is currently not offering traditional private tours, but they are offering “Art and Talk,” a 20-minute, COVID-friendly overview from the exhibit’s curator, Mark Castro, before an open hour to explore the gallery. Mr. Castro will be available for questions during that time.

Mark A. Castro has been the Jorge Baldor Curator of Latin American Art at the Dallas Museum of Art since 2019. During his time, he has also curated/co-curated Flores Mexicanas: Women in Modern Mexican Art (2019), To Be Determined (2020), Frida Kahlo: Five Works (2021), and Devoted: Art and Spirituality in Mexico and New Mexico (2021). Although Castro’s research has touched on various regions of Latin America, his primary focus is on the arts of Mexico, from the viceregal era through the twentieth century. Castro holds a B.A. in archaeology and studio art from Hamilton College, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in art history from Bryn Mawr College.
