Political polarization in the United States is undeniable. But as parties shift further to the extremes – particularly in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election and the pandemic – how will Americans come back together to secure a prosperous future for the country? From exposing political strains in the Biden administration to revealing conflict between former President Trump and his fellow party members, the authors of This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle of America’s Future, Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin, aim to expose the fractures growing within both parties.

Join the Council as Karl Rove, senior advisor to President George W. Bush, engages in an exciting conversation with Jonathan Martin. Drawing on his experiences as a political correspondent for the New York Times, Martin will assess whether American democracy can rise from beyond the political divide or if the fissures simply run too deep.

Karl Rove was senior advisor President George W. Bush and deputy chief of staff. Rove founded Karl Rove + Company, a public affairs firm based in Austin focused on nonpartisan causes, nonprofit groups, and Republican candidates. He is also the author of The Triumph of William McKinley: Why the Election of 1896 Still Matters and Courage and Consequence. Rove currently pens a weekly op-ed for the Wall Street Journal and is a contributor for Fox News.

Jonathan Martin, coauthor of This Will Not Pass, serves as a national political correspondent for the New York Times as well as a political analyst for CNN. Since its launch in 2007, Martin has also worked as senior political writer for POLITICO. He is coauthor of The End of the Line: Romney vs. Obama: The 34 Days That Decided the Election. Martin can regularly be seen on CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, MSNBC, and NPR. He holds a B.A. from Hampden-Sydney College.
