The disappearance of Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi last fall immediately raised questions about the American relationship with Saudi Arabia.
The uncertainties included America’s energy issues. In Bloomberg Opinion, Meghan O'Sullivan wrote that “although the U.S. energy boom has boosted America’s power in a large number of ways, it does not afford the U.S. the luxury of not caring about what happens in the Middle East.”

During 2004-2007, Dr. O’Sullivan was Deputy National Security Advisor for Iraq and Afghanistan. Her experience in international negotiations includes work on treaties in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Northern Ireland. In 2008, Esquire Magazine named one of “the most influential people of the century.”  Today she is the Jean Kirkpatrick Professor of the Practice of International Affairs and the Director of the Geopolitics of Energy Project at Harvard University’s Kennedy School. A Georgetown University graduate, she holds both a master of science in economics and a doctorate in politics from Oxford University.
