Ambassador Michael McFaul has been described as the “leading scholar on post-Communist Russia.” He’s also been regarded as an “enemy” of Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Ten years after the end of the Soviet Union at Christmas in 1991 which marked a new era of diplomacy with a new nation, the Russian Federation, President Barack Obama appointed veteran National Security Council Russia-watcher Michael McFaul to be American Ambassador to the Russian Federation.

He served 2012-14 during an era made difficult by newly-elected Federation President Vladimir Putin. The conflict was personal. As the Ambassador once wrote, “Putin would need an enemy, and he turned to the most reliable one in Russia’s recent history: the United States and then, by extension, me.” Ambassador McFaul’s experience resulted in his New York Times best-seller, From Cold War to Hot Peace: An American Ambassador in Putin’s Russia.

Ambassador McFaul, a Montana native, is a prolific writer who holds degrees from Stanford University and is a Rhodes Scholar who earned his Ph.D. in International Relations at Oxford in 1991.

Part of the Ambassadorial Legends Series
and is the Inaugural Mel Kusin National Security Lecture
