Remembering Our 41st President

We pause this week to remember President George H.W. Bush, who was a great friend and supporter of our Council. President Bush graciously accepted the H. Neil Mallon Award named for his friend who, in 1948, encouraged Yale graduate George Bush to start his career and make his home in Texas. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Bush family.

This week at the Council we're welcoming members on Thursday night to our annual Open House. As we watch the Brexit battles within Prime Minister Theresa May's government continue in the U.K., we recommend listening to Jim Falk's recent Global IQ Minute podcast with Ireland's Ambassador to the U.S. Daniel Mulhall to learn more about it, deal or no deal. Council members have the opportunity on Monday, November 13, to hear a man who was a real “top spy,” Sir Richard Dearlove, the Chief of MI6, Great Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, from 1999 until he retired in 2004.

A respected member of the clandestine community, he has been in the headlines in recent months for his comments on the state of Europe, Donald Trump and the Russians.

In April, the experienced international analyst said terrorism is manageable in the United Kingdom. But he also said, “The deterioration of European politics, with the rise of parties on the extreme right, is a far more serious problem for the UK. It is not in the UK’s national interest to see continental Europe being split apart by the revival of nationalist movements.”

That same month, the former top intelligence officer told England’s Prospect magazine, “What lingers for Trump may be what deals—on what terms—he did after the financial crisis of 2008 to borrow Russian money when others in the west apparently would not lend to him”.

Sir Richard is frequently called upon by media to comment on international affairs and developments that have affected or may affect the United Kingdom. Sir Richard’s MI6 designation was “C,” the real-life equivalent of the James Bond movies’ spy chief, “M.”

This native of Gorran Haven in Cornwall was educated in England and Connecticut before attending Queen’s College at Cambridge. His MI6 career began in 1966 and he was posted to Nairobi in 1968. Then, after positons in Prague, Paris and Geneva, he was appointed head of MI6’s Washington station in 1991, director of personnel and administration in 1993 and operations director in 1994.
