Diplomacy Begins Here
Global Ties U.S. Regional Summit

Tuesday, September 19, 2017

Global Ties U.S., in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, are hosting a series of Diplomacy Begins Here summits across the United States that will bring together local, national, and international leaders from the business, government, and nonprofit world.

Together, we will foster connections and growth in the international exchange community and celebrate the critical role that public and citizen diplomacy programs play in building a more peaceful, prosperous world at home and abroad.

GlobalAustin, in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Dallas, the San Antonio Council for International Visitors, Global North Texas, El Paso Council for International Visitors, and World Affairs Council of South Texas, has been awarded an opportunity by the U.S. Department of State to host a regional summit to be held on September 19 at the Texas State Capitol Building. The summit will focus on the impact of U.S. foreign policy priorities on local communities while celebrating the role of individual citizens in creating a positive image in the world for their region and the U.S. in general.

GlobalAustin, a nonpartisan grassroots organization, has served Central Texas for over 60 years, connecting Austin community members with citizens from around the world as part of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). Through short-term visits to the United States, current and emerging foreign leaders in a variety of fields experience this country firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts, including here in Texas. Each year, GlobalAustin hosts over 300 leaders and professionals from dozens of countries worldwide.

Through this summit, we hope to create a better understanding of the meaning of global citizenship, demonstrate the effect that U.S. foreign policy has on our community, and increase appreciation for the exchange of people and ideas across cultures. In particular, we hope to demonstrate how international exchanges of people and perspectives support global political and economic relations, as well as friendly, trusted relationships that encourage peace.

On September 19, we will hold an all day summit featuring expert speakers on current and emerging US foreign policy priorities, panel discussions such as on the contributions of immigrants and international partners to innovation, economic development, and cultural diversity, as well as a series of sessions designed especially for youth participants. The day will conclude with a “musical diplomacy” celebration at Scholz Garten featuring our own, award-winning, and internationally-recognized singer, Gina Chavez.
