World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth

Author and historian Mark Updegrove has devoted his career to studying the American presidency. He has written five books about it, the latest of which is The Last Republicans: Inside the Extraordinary Relationship Between George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, a relationship that Lawrence Wright called, “one of the most fascinating and consequential relationships in the history of the American presidency” that “from the end of the Cold War through 9/11… shaped the world we live in.”

Bob Schieffer says of The Last Republicans, “This is more than just a fascinating inside story of the relationship of George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, and Mark Updegrove gives us plenty of insight on that. But at a time when American politics is in turmoil, Updegrove traces the great changes that the Republican Party has undergone from the kinder, gentler Bush days and raises a question pertinent to Americans across the political spectrum: Is the party they presided over gone forever, replaced by something not yet defined.”

Global Forum members are invited to meet Mr. Updegrove at a complimentary program and book signing on Thursday, Dec. 14 at the Council’s Nokia Conference Center. The reception begins at 6 p.m. and the program and book signing at 6:30 p.m. Copies of Mr. Updegrove’s book will be available for purchase.

Mr. Updegrove served as the director of the LBJ Presidential Library from 2009-2017 and will become CEO of the new National Medal of Honor Museum to be built in Mt. Pleasant, SC. He has conducted interviews with five U.S. presidents and authored Indomitable Will: LBJ in the Presidency, Second Acts: Presidential Lives and Legacies After the White House, Baptism by Fire: Eight Presidents Who Took Office During Times of Crisis, and Destiny of Democracy: The Civil Rights Summit at the LBJ Presidential Library. Mr. Updegrove’s journalism career includes serving as manager of TIME magazine in Los Angeles, president of TIMECanada, and publisher of Newsweek magazine. He is an analyst for ABC News on presidential matters, and has written for many other publications.
