Fake news. Hacks into DNC computers. The scandalous Russian (Steele) dossier. They’re just a few of the headlines that unfolded during one of the wildest campaigns in modern U.S. history—the 2016 presidential race. Adam Segal considers how the rise of digital technology—particularly the proliferation of the Internet and social media—are not only transforming the way we get news, but re-wiring our political system, national security, diplomatic relations, and much more.

As a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and director of its Digital and Cyberspace Policy Program, Segal is an expert on the complexities of the web. His latest book, The Hacked World Order: How Nations Fight, Trade, Maneuver, and Manipulate in the Digital Age, offers sobering insights into the contentious geopolitics that are quickly becoming the new normal. His work has appeared in the Financial Times, The Economist, Foreign Policy, The Wall Street Journal, and Foreign Affairs

Hear his provocative point of view during Hacking, Fake News, Cyber Security: Their Impact on American Elections—part of our International Perspectives Series.
