Remembering Our 41st President

We pause this week to remember President George H.W. Bush, who was a great friend and supporter of our Council. President Bush graciously accepted the H. Neil Mallon Award named for his friend who, in 1948, encouraged Yale graduate George Bush to start his career and make his home in Texas. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Bush family.

This week at the Council we're welcoming members on Thursday night to our annual Open House. As we watch the Brexit battles within Prime Minister Theresa May's government continue in the U.K., we recommend listening to Jim Falk's recent Global IQ Minute podcast with Ireland's Ambassador to the U.S. Daniel Mulhall to learn more about it, deal or no deal. Long before he was one of the world’s most celebrated military scholars, Max Boot was boy a growing up in Russia. Born in Moscow, his family emigrated to the United States when he was six years old. He couldn’t speak a word of English, yet he embraced his new home, U.S. culture. A gifted student, he excelled at the University of California, Berkley and Yale.

Along with best-selling books, Boot has written for the Christian Science Monitor, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and other news organizations. Named “one of the 500 most influential people in the United States in the field of foreign policy,” he has been a coveted advisor to U.S. commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to John McCain and Marco Rubio during their presidential campaigns.

And that is just a short list of his accomplishments.

Now a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, Boot has focused his attention on the enigmatic conflict that still haunts many in his new book—The Road Not Taken: Edward Lansdale and the American Tragedy in Vietnam.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to meet Boot and hear his fascinating perspective on Vietnam and more.
