Unlike most countries in the Maghreb that were affected by the Arab Spring, Algeria has experienced relative calm under the long-time rule of a small group of power players known as “le pouvoir” headed by the ailing 80-year-old President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

That could soon change, though. A sustained downturn in hydrocarbon prices worldwide has taken a toll on Algeria’s economy. Without new revenues to fill the void—and stringent austerity measures placing financial pressure on citizens—new voices are beginning to express dissent. How will political uncertainty affect Algeria’s relationship with the United States?

As an important ally against terrorism and one of America's most important trading partners in the Middle East and North Africa, Algeria has been a stabilizing influence on the continent—despite periodic tensions with Morocco.

His Excellency Madjid Bouguerra, Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the United States, reveals what’s at stake for his nation during this special World Affairs Council reception and program.
