7:30 PM Program & Book Signing
The Dallas Museum of Art - Horchow Auditorium

During his lifetime, Nelson Mandela was an impassioned and tireless activist against the cruelty and injustices of South Africa’s apartheid government. Imprisoned for nearly three decades, not even his jailors could crush his spirit or singular focus on its oppression.

In honor of Mandela’s legacy, a new book celebrates his 100th birthday. The Prison Letters of Nelson Mandela reveals the warmth, strength and conviction of this remarkable man through his personal letters.

Edited by veteran South African journalist Sahm Venter who covered the anti-apartheid struggle for more than 20 years—including Mandela’s release from prison in 1990, South Africa’s transition to democracy and Mandela’s rise as South Africa’s first democratically elected president in 1994—the collection features many letters that have never been seen by the public.

A foreword written by Nelson’s granddaughter, Zamaswazi Dlamini-Mandela, an entrepreneur devoted to advancing her grandparents' message of youth education and empowerment, adds additional understanding into this rare iconoclast.

Venter and Dlamini-Mandela will share their personal insights as the World Affairs Council commemorates the anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate’s birth with a special program at the Dallas Museum of Art’s Horchow Auditorium.

*Members are encouraged to bring their high-school or college-age children or grandchildren to this event using the $10 student price special.
