Like many who enlisted in the military after 9/11, Amaryllis Fox was inspired to do the same following the brutal capture and beheading of her writing mentor Daniel Pearl. After graduating with honors from Oxford, Fox started graduate work in international security at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, where she developed an algorithm to predict terrorist activity, which caught the eye of the CIA. As Fox describes in her memoir, "Life Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA," Fox began working for the CIA as a Southeast Asia political and terrorism analyst while commuting between Langley and Georgetown to finish her degree. Following graduation at the age of 22, Fox moved into the operational training program and served in the CIA’s elite Clandestine Service overseas in a non-official cover. Like a great espionage novel, Fox masterfully conveys the exhilaration and loneliness of life undercover.

Fox's CIA life ended after the birth of her daughter inspired her to work for peace as a community builder. She used her coding abilities and international expertise to found Mulu, a successful e-commerce company supporting at-risk communities around the world. Later, Fox was recruited by Twitter to run consumer products for its global e-commerce business. Now she writes about the lessons learned from her career in counterterrorism.
