The World: A Brief Introduction
Richard Haass, President, Council on Foreign Relations

Thursday, July 16, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Thursday, July 16, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, has written a primer on the world entitled "The World: A Brief Introduction." As he says, “Global literacy—knowing how the world works—is a must, as what goes on outside a country matters enormously to what happens inside.” He focuses on “essential history, what makes each region of the world tick, the many challenges globalization presents, and the most influential countries, events, and ideas.” This book belongs in every Council member’s library as we strive to understand our world and its impact on our choices as citizens, parents, employers and investors. This opportunity for your own Council conversation with this esteemed expert is not to be missed.

In his 18th year as president of the Council on Foreign Relations, Dr. Richard Haass is a veteran diplomat and a prominent voice on American foreign policy. Haass was director of policy planning for the Department of State and a principal advisor to Secretary of State Colin Powell. Confirmed by the U.S. Senate to hold the rank of ambassador, Haass also served as U.S. coordinator for policy toward the future of Afghanistan and U.S. envoy to the Northern Ireland peace process. His extensive government experience includes service on President George H.W. Bush’s National Security Council as well as service in the Department of Defense and as a U.S. Senate legislative aide. A Rhodes Scholar, Haass holds a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and master’s and doctorate of philosophy degrees from Oxford University. He is the author or editor of fourteen books on American foreign policy and one book on management.

Haass will be in conversation with Jim Falk and listeners will be able to submit questions.
