The Kill Chain: Defending America in the Future of High-Tech Warfare
Christian Brose, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, with John Ward

Thursday, July 2, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Thursday, July 2, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

As staff director of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Chris Brose developed a deep knowledge of the operations, policies, resources and spending of all U.S. defense activity. Now he is sounding an alarm: America is losing its competitive advantage as the fundamental character of warfare evolves from soldier vs. soldier to technology vs. technology. Brose says new ways of thinking and the adoption of emerging technology are needed to rapidly understand threats, make wise decisions, and take military actions – the process known as “the kill chain.” Join this Council conversation moderated by John Ward to learn how America can re-energize its 21st century battle network.

Christian Brose, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and head of strategy at Anduril Industries, was staff director of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee from 2015-2018. Brose served as senior policy adviser to Senator John McCain and as policy advisor and chief speechwriter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Brose studied political science at Kenyon College and international economics at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

John Ward (COL RET.) joined Lockheed Martin in 1987 after a 28-year military career in the U.S. Army where he served in numerous command and staff positions in the U.S. and abroad, including battalion command in Desert Shield/Storm and culminating in his assignment as Commander, Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. At Lockheed Martin, he worked with targeting and navigation systems for military aircraft and tactical missile systems. He joined the corporate staff as Vice President – Domestic Business Development and he retired in 2014. Mr. Ward is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and an MSBA from Boston University.
