Tuesday, September 22, 2020 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

What does freedom mean in a country that is home to the world’s largest incarcerated population? Lawyer, activist, and Dallas-based author Brittany Barnett unpacks the disparities between equality and freedom in her book, “A Knock at Midnight.”

While working in corporate law, Barnett took on a pro bono case that forever altered her awareness of the magnitude of mass incarceration in America. Since then, she has worked to free many people, even some sentenced to life with no parole, as well as seven recipients of executive clemency from President Obama. Through her poignant memoir, Barnett sheds light on her “uphill struggle to bring hope and change to our criminal justice system” – a struggle that “continues to transform [her] understanding of justice and the very definition of freedom itself” in her conversation with Ambassador Ron Kirk.

Brittany Barnett, a graduate of SMU’s Dedman School of Law, is the founder of Buried Alive Project and Girls Embracing Mothers and XVI Capital Partners and Milena Reign.

Ambassador Ron Kirk is the first African-American to serve as U.S. trade representative from 2009 to 2013 and was a member of President Barack Obama’s cabinet. He was also the first African-American elected as Mayor of Dallas in 1995. Ambassador Kirk is currently senior of counsel with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher’s Dallas and Washington D.C. offices. He was born in Austin and received his law degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
