About the Book
In the television series, The Americans, writer and producer Joe Weisberg revived the era of Russian sleeper cells and espionage gone amok. While fictional, the depiction in the show is a good reminder of the tumultuous relationship the United States and Russia have navigated over time – going from allies in the second world war to fierce adversaries in the Cold War. Today, ‘frenemies’ may be the most appropriate term. But as two of the world’s greatest powers, what more could we accomplish if we found a new way to get along?

In Russia Upside Down, Weisberg argues that, although the idea of a world split between America and Russia or capitalism versus communism no longer applies, U.S. foreign policy has done little adapting to keep up. In Weisberg’s view, the changing dynamics between the U.S. and Russia, as well as their places on the world stage, necessitate that the American approach to this contentious relationship undergo a fundamental reevaluation. As two nations with many similar interests, Weisberg argues that the two former adversaries may find a more effective approach in dealing with one another by coming to a better understanding of the other side.
