A recent article by Thomas J. Bollyky in Foreign Affairs began, “For the first time in recorded history, bacteria, viruses, and other infectious agents do not cause the majority of deaths or disabilities in any region of the world.” Good news? Not so fast. There are economic and societal consequences, says Bollyky, author of Plagues and the Paradox of Progress: Why the World is Getting Healthier in Worrisome Ways.

Bollyky is director of the Global Health Program and Senior Fellow for Global Health, Economics and Development at the Council on Foreign Relations.  He received a BA in biology and history from Columbia University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Stanford Law School, where he was president of the Stanford Law & Policy Review. He’s been a consultant to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and legal advisor to the World Health Organization. In 2013, the World Economic Forum named him a “Global Leader Under 40.”
