The opioid crisis has devastated the U.S., taking hundreds of thousands of lives and costing the country an estimated $37 billion. Much of the blame has been placed on pharmaceutical giants for aggressive marketing of prescription opioids and the FDA for lack of regulation. But what is the international dimension of the opioid crisis and what is the U.S. doing to combat this disregard for American lives and livelihoods?

James A. Walsh from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs is responsible for supporting the State Department programs and policies to combat illicit drugs and organized crime around the world. Prior to his government service, Walsh worked in the private sector for five years supporting Fortune 500 companies. A U.S. Army veteran, Walsh served eight years where he had several overseas deployments leading aviation units. He is a career member of the Senior Executive Service, has a bachelor’s degree from West Point and a master’s degree in business administration from Bowie State University.
