Russell Gold - The Boom: How Fracking Ignited the American Energy Revolution and Changed the World
Senior Energy Writer, The Wall Street Journal

Thursday, April 24, 2014 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Russell Gold

Some people think fracking has been shaking up their neighborhoods in North Texas, but author Russell Gold demonstrates that fracking also shook up the energy industry.

He is the senior energy writer at The Wall Street Journal and his latest book is titled The Boom: How Fracking Ignited the American Energy Revolution and Changed the World.

The Austin-based Gold has covered many aspects of the petroleum industry, from fracking fights, to drilling moratoriums, to China's global oil $44 billion "shopping spree," to the safety of oil trains. His work is catalogued online at The Wall Street Journal.

In writing The Boom, he turned his reporting skills to examining all aspects of fracking, including the history of what is, in longhand, "hydraulic fracturing … the process of injecting fluid into the ground at extremely high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks and release the oil and natural gas inside."

The Boom, Gold's first book, goes on sale April 8 both as a hardcover and an e-book. It is described by publisher Simon & Schuster as "a thrilling journey filled with memorable and colorful characters: a green-minded Texas oilman who created the first modern frack; an Oklahoman natural gas empire–builder who gave the world an enormous new supply of energy but was brought down by his own success; and a cast of many."

Gold, a 1993 Columbia University graduate, has been an energy reporter at The Wall Street Journal since 2002. He won UCLA's Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his coverage of the 2010 British Petroleum/Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
