An unjust verdict in a horrifying murder case sent a stunned and mourning husband to a Texas prison for a quarter of a century -- he claimed innocence, that he did not murder his young wife in front of their only child. But, as a sheriff and a prosecutor vigorously pressed the case against him and held onto evidence, his protests were ignored until New York's Innocent Project and Texas attorney John Raley combined efforts to seek justice

That story is outlined in the second documentary featured in the Council's Human Rights FilmFocus 14. Titled An Unreal Dream: The Michael Morton Story, the film by director/writer Al Reinert tracks the case from the 1986 murder through personal heartbreak, legal battles and freedom 25 years after the misguided charges were filed

An Unreal Dream focuses on the reality of the pursuit of justice and, indeed, a discovery of the real murderer, a man who killed more than once. It is a chilling story of personal loss leading to a triumph for a person and a change in a system.
