As the recent United Nations report on atrocities by the North Korean government continues to resonate, the Council's Human Rights FilmFocus '14 closes its three-film series with a documentary based on a life saved from a horrifying existence, Camp 14—Total Control Zone. It is the story of Shin Dong-huyk, born and raised in a world of official torture, indignity, terror and hopelessness in North Korea.

His entire life — until an older prisoner helped him escape — was an existence of fear, abuse, betrayal and misery. He was a child of two prisoners forced to marry by camp wardens. The documentary shows his personal struggle with his past and with his future.

A new life of freedom for Shin Dong-huyk began with his escape from the death camp in 2005 — but he confesses that his mind is never free of the things he saw and experienced. He has the physical and mental scars of life in a camp where, he says, "Our sole purpose was to follow the rules of the work camp and then die."
