Maz Jobrani: International Standup Comedian Taking on Politics, Society and His Two Young Kids

Born in Tehran and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, a career in comedy with an international tone would seem to be a natural pursuit for Maz Jobrani. He is an actor, producer, director and stand-up comedian whose career has made him a spokesman for barrier-breaking laughter.

The title of his Council program demonstrates his range: "International Standup Comedian Taking on Politics, Society and His Two Young Kids."

He is a frequent panelist on National Public Radio's show of wry and comic observations, Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me, broadcast on weekends by KERA-FM in Dallas.

From 2005 through 2011, he was a member of the acclaimed Axis of Evil Comedy Tour, four American comedians with Middle Eastern origins discussing such things as coping with their ethnicity in America.

Jobrani was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1972, moved to California when he was 6 and was raised in Tiburon, near San Francisco. He is a naturalized American citizen.

While entertainment is his career, he also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Italian from the University of California at Berkley. His acting career ranges from a 1999 appearance on TV's Chicago Hope to many motion pictures and the lead role in the upcoming comedy/private eye film Jimmy Vestwood: Amerikan Hero.

Writing for the Dallas website TheaterJones.com, reviewer Kris Noteboom described Jobrani as "one of the more talented and dialed-in comedians" and wrote that, in his show at Addison Improv 2 years ago, "Boundaries were broken down and everyone laughed at the troubles of the world together. Besides being funny, it was quietly reassuring."
