The Economist's John Micklethwait & Adrian Wooldridge - The Fourth Revolution: The Global Race to Reinvent the State
John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief, The Economist; Adrian Wooldridge, Managing Editor and Schumpeter Columnist, The Economist

Friday, May 23, 2014 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

In 2004, authors John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge scored critical success with their book The Right Nation, analyzing the rise of the Republican Party in the United States after the 1960s.

Now, Micklethwait, editor-in-chief of The Economist, and his colleague, Wooldridge, managing editor and columnist at The Economist, have teamed to examine a new subject with chilling conclusions for western governments, especially the United States.

Their latest book is called The Fourth Revolution: The Global Race To Reinvent the State. Their theory is a country's ability to survive in the modern world depends on its ability to "reinvent the state." Western governments, notably the United States, they say, are largely failing at this task. When they fail, they lose the race "to see which political values will triumph in the 21st century."

FYI: The three previous government revolutions, according to the author's publicist, were the creation of the nation-state in the mid-1600s, moving government from aristocracy to reform-minded thinkers in the 1800s and, in the 20th century, government becoming concerned with well-being of poor citizens with reforms that led to the "welfare state."
