FILM SCREENING: Walesa: Man of Hope

Tuesday, May 27, 2014 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Lech Walesa, an electrician who became a union activist in a Communist era, won a Nobel Peace Prize and was elected president of Poland. Sounds like a movie script. It is.

Poland's beloved former president is the topic in a biographic film Walesa: Man of Hope. The movie focuses on the founder of the Solidarity movement, portraying him as, a review in The Guardian said, "a bullish, courageous man, stubborn and cantankerous, with an exasperating charm and the precious gift of the gab."

The Council presents the film on Tuesday, May 27, at the Angelika Film Center & Café with a panel discussion led by Mark C. Fisher, managing director of the European offices of The German Marshall Fund of the United States. The film was directed by Andrzej Wajda, a legendary Polish filmmaker. Actor Robert Wieckiewicz stars in the title role.
