Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East
Scott Anderson, Veteran War Correspondent

Wednesday, June 4, 2014 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Though it has been nearly 100 years since T.E. Lawrence was crafting his Arab plan, the story is refreshed each time Turner Classic Movies shows the Peter O'Toole epic, Lawrence of Arabia. There is, of course, more to the story.

Journalist and best-selling novelist Scott Anderson has penned a highly-regarded work of non-fiction that explores the significance of the personalities who shaped a region that is consistently on the front pages. His book is titled Lawrence In Arabia, but it is the subtitle that captures the tale: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East.

He writes that T.E. Lawrence is firmly at the center of the story of the modern Middle East. And he carefully documents the "intertwined paths" of four men regarded as schemers, warriors and betrayers. It is a story of spymasters at work in a land that had yet to be organized in accordance with western standards.
