Film Screening - Wadjda - Fort Worth

Thursday, July 17, 2014 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The story sounds simple. A girl wants a green bicycle and works to buy it. But this is in Saudi Arabia and there are gender complications.

Wadjda, filmed in Saudi Arabia and a woman's story directed by a woman, explores the many ways this school girl rises to the challenge of earning enough money to buy the coveted bicycle, including winning a Koran recitation contest and not being given the cash prize. Her efforts meet with opposition after opposition -- cultural and religious barriers that oppress women. According to the International Movie Database, such oppression extended to the director of the movie, Haifaa Al-Mansour, who, because of restrictions on women in Saudi Arabia, "was not allowed to interact with her mostly male crew" thus directed street scenes via walkie talkie from a nearby van while watching the action through a monitor.
