GLOBAL FORUM: Jason Grumet - City of Rivals: Restoring the Glorious Mess of American Democracy
Founder and president of the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC)

Tuesday, October 28, 2014 8:00 AM - 9:30 AM

Jason Grumet is an influential and bipartisan voice on energy and its associated environmental challenges. He is an expert on several issues such as healthcare, agriculture, and transportation and is the founder and president of the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), an extensive organization designed with former U.S. Senate Majority Leaders to develop and promote bipartisan solutions to the country’s most difficult public policy changes. A respected leader on both sides of the political aisle, Grumet works with top-tier deciders in political, academic, and industry circles—the crucial middleground where politics meets policy and where real, sustainable, and agreeable change happens.

Throughout his career, Grumet has worked at the intersection of policy and politics. Grumet has been the founder and executive director of several political associations, including the National Commission on Energy Policy and the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management. Under Grumet’s leadership, the National Commission on Energy Policy has created policies involving specific legislative approaches to promote domestic energy production and the first updates of U.S. automotive fuel economy standards in thirty years. His eight-year tenure with the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management expanded the organization’s technical and advocacy capabilities, increasing its presence in the national policy debate.

Jason Grumet sets out a pragmatic new strategy to get Washington working again in a new book, City of Rivals: Restoring the Glorious Mess of American Democracy. In the publication, Grumet looks beyond the usual diagnosis to a spate of ill-designed reforms that have undermined the opportunity for deliberation and “constructive partisanship.” The think-tank leader blames the convenience of air travel and a breakdown in public trust that has led to overzealous transparency and ethics reforms as well as poorly designed restrictions on congressional travel, earmarks, and campaign giving. Optimistic about the nation’s future, the author focuses on the paralysis in Washington, how to fix it, and how to move forward.

Grumet is a frequent witness at Congressional hearings and regularly appears in national media outlets. Grumet received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University and his Juris Doctorate from Harvard University. He lives with his wife, Stephanie, and their three children in Bethesda, Maryland.
