In the face of sometimes vicious and oppressive cultural and governmental obstacles, the road to education as a human right has become a challenging learning experience.

The day-long International Conference on Education as a Human Right will focus on defeating barricades - issues of gender, race, class and ability.

Distinguished panelists with experience in the field of human rights will present morning session on class and race and afternoon discussions of gender and ability. The hosts for the Saturday, March 28, conference are SMU's Embrey Human Rights Program, the international education organization ConnecTeach and the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth. Representatives of each organization are scheduled to speak during the noon luncheon at the conference.

The founder of ConnecTeach, Bhavani Parpia, a veteran North Texas teacher, was awarded the World Affairs Council's 2013 International Educator of the Year. In 2014, she was the inaugural local recipient of Embrey's Triumph of the Spirit Award for her inspirational work with ConnecTeach.

The conference's closing remarks will be presented by Rick Halperin, director of the Embrey Human Rights Program and renowned recipient of many humanitarian honors.
